The work

Depth of experience,
a personal approach.

Learning, reflective practice and support tailored to each person, practitioner or organisation, drawing on a pluralistic perspective.

  • Choice Theory & Reality Therapy programmes

The William Glasser International certification pathway, from the Basic Intensive Week through to certification. Take Charge of Your Life (TCoYL) group workshops, also with William Glasser International. Both are offered in person and online, in Ireland and internationally.

  • Mental Freedom® Experience (MFX)

Mental Freedom® is a way of responding to life that helps you stay grounded, clear and intentional – even when things are difficult. I facilitate MFX groups through Olver International, in person and online.

  • Leadership and wellbeing for organisations

Lead Management and mental health programmes that help education, healthcare and corporate organisations create cultures where people do their best work – without coercion.

  • Clinical supervision

A collaborative space for reflection, confidence, professional rigour and constructive challenge – one-to-one and in groups, for counsellors, psychotherapists and supervisors.

  • Mentoring

For practitioners and educators at every stage – finding confidence, shaping a career, or building a practice or training business of your own. Mentoring has always been part of my work, from students and new graduates to colleagues setting up on their own, drawing on my experience of founding and leading a college and a charity.

  • International partnerships

Programmes designed and delivered with partner organisations abroad, working with a network of experienced trainers.

A small number of places are available for one-to-one therapy and individual supervision.

Dr Marcella Finnerty

Experience behind the work.

I’m Marcella – an educator, psychotherapist, and clinical and academic supervisor. As an entrepreneur in education and a social entrepreneur, I founded IICP College and the charity Village Counselling Service. I’m now bringing that experience to a new, more personal chapter of education, supervision and consultancy, in Ireland and internationally.

I served as Deputy Director of the M.Ed. in Educational Guidance and Counselling at Trinity College Dublin. I was appointed by the Minister for Health to the CORU Counsellors and Psychotherapists Registration Board (2019–2025), serving two complete terms, and was elected to the CORU Council during my second term.

I’m an Advanced Instructor and Senior Faculty with William Glasser International, where I teach Choice Theory at Basic, Advanced and Certification stages and have taught more than 1,000 professionals.

I’m also a researcher. My doctoral research on pluralistic practice shaped a Level 9 Master’s programme, and I’ve published with Professors John McLeod and John Norcross. I’ve chaired national and international conferences, and I serve on the Editorial Board of the Pluralistic Practice Journal and the William Glasser International Research Committee.

“People have always been at the heart of my work.”

Warmth, curiosity and thoughtful challenge.

What colleagues say

Warmth that encourages. Experience that steadies.

  • “Throughout every stage of my journey, Marcella has been one of the most influential and encouraging people in my professional life. She believed in me long before I believed in myself and has an incredible ability to see possibilities in people before they can see those possibilities for themselves. She genuinely cares.”

Maura Carey Director, Cherry Blossom Therapy · Psychotherapist · Lecturer · Clinical Supervisor
  • “Marcella is very personable, down to earth and knowledgeable. She was always so approachable, supportive and generous with her time, and I’ve continued to value her advice, encouragement and willingness to share ideas and offer a different perspective.”

    Lesley-Ann O’Flaherty Psychotherapist, Dubai
  • “Marcella has an incredible gift in teaching and inspiring others. I have never forgotten the training I did with her in Reality Therapy, which was so creative and transformational.”

    Vicky McEvoy Director, Vital Connexions
  • “Just like the carpenter to a block of wood, Marcella has a unique way of finding the best in people and ‘inviting’ the best out of them using her warmth, compassion and wisdom to help them to shape themselves.”

Allen Gilhooly Managing Director, Sligo Community Counselling Ltd.
